A recent poll from Discover Wildlife has voted our beautiful Scaur Glen as the UK’s third favourite spot for wildlife. So, if you’re looking for a holiday cottage in Scaur Glen, where better to start than the Auchenbrack Estate. Our unique self catering cottages are located in the neighbouring Shinnel Glen and make the ideal base for your wildlife spotting holiday. We’ve made it easy for you to check availability, prices and book directly and securely through our website, with no hidden fees or surprises! Our holiday cottages are close to the village of Penpont, which has a great village shop and cafe. We’re also a short drive from the, slightly bigger, village of Thornhill. Thornhill boasts two convenience stores, three pubs, take away options for fish and chips, Chinese food and pizza. There are also a selection of independent shops, a hardware store, butcher and hairdressers/barbers. Why not pop in to the Buccleuch & Queensberry Arms Hotel for a fantastic meal and a cocktail or two!

The best wildlife spotting holiday in South West Scotland…

The poll from Discover Wildlife was launched in January this year, where 60 of the network’s conservationists, presenters, writers and photographers were asked to share their favourite UK spaces fro wildlife. The nominations were then put to a public vote, resulting in a top 10 which was decided by a YouGov poll.

Scaur Glen took a very respectable third place, just missing out to the winner, the beautiful Causeway Coast in Ireland and the runner up, Wimbledon Common in London. Scaur Glen was nominated by the British Trust for Ornithology’s Juliet Vickery (thanks Juliet!) Read the full article here.

The top 10 were:

  1. Causeway Coast (Northern Ireland)

  2. Wimbledon Common (London)

  3. Scaur Glen (Scotland)

  4. Isles of Scilly (South West)

  5. Rodley Nature Reserve (Yorkshire)

  6. RSPB Ynys-hir (Wales)

  7. Winter Hill (North)

  8. Middleton Lakes (Midlands)

  9. St Catherine’s Hill (South East)

  10. Canvey Wick (East and Jersey)

The article mentions just a fraction of the incredible selection of wildlife we’re lucky to host in the Scaur Glen and Shinnel Glen. Specifically dippers, grey wagtails, sandpipers and oystercatchers as well as the occasional glimpse of the majestic Peregrine.

South west Scotland has an exceptional reputation for wildlife, hosting hundreds of species of birds, mammals, fish, flora and fauna. We are also custodians of some of the UK’s rarest, protected species.
